SAFETY EVALUATION (STEP)
Safety Evaluation

Established in 1989, the Safety Training and Evaluation Process (STEP) serves as a valuable tool for ABC members to consistently build upon their safety programs and gain recognition for their outstanding efforts. The program was developed
and written by contractors, for contractors. It provides your company with the following benefits:
  • Structured approach to examine and further develop your company's safety and loss prevention program.
  • Clear, legitimate, and objective methods to measure your company's safety program improvements.

View a PDF of statistics validating the benefits of this program to your company.

The STEP tool is simple to use. There are 20 key safety components; you will be asked to self-evaluate your safety and health program by answering a number of questions within those safety areas.
Each safety component area provides you with objective, measurable goals to help improve your safety and loss program.

The best part of this service is that it helps you to enhance your company’s safety program – and the STEP program is FREE!

    The 2012 STEP application (PDF)

is now available. They are due to the Chapter office by February 8, 2012 for recognition at the Safety Awards Breakfast in April.

Here's a news release listing the 2011 award winners.

Safety Committee members are knowledgeable and willing to share with other members. They made personal contacts to help members improve their program with STEP:

“… I met with Jeff Pierce from Warfel Construction Company this morning to go over the ABC step application process. He was very informative and a pleasure to speak with."

    - Shelly Novak, Real Services, Inc.

    Testimonial from a STEP participant:

“Our firm has had a safety program and a safety committee for a long time and frankly I was fairly pleased with how safe our organization has been over the last few years. But I still decided to have our safety committee fill out the STEP application in an attempt to find a comparison to others in the industry. It turns out we are safe. We received an award at the silver level of the STEP program. But it also points out to us that we have room for improvement so now our safety committee has a point of reference for where they stand among their peers. In my view this can only lead to a more conscientious effort to improve our organization’s safety record.”

    FirstSTEP

The Safety Training Evaluation Process (STEP) has been around for many years. It is a proven valuable tool and resource. But for some, STEP can be more like a JUMP! That’s why ABC National’s Environment, Health and Safety Committee developed FirstSTEP.

If you are a smaller contractor that wants to “start somewhere” with safety, then this NEW tool is for you! The road map (aka FirstSTEP) gives you some very basic components to consider as you work on building the foundation of your safety program.

Contact Sherry Evans at ABC Keystone if you have questions along the way.

    Step into STEP

Would your company like to develop a comprehensive safety program? Do you know where to begin? Now there’s “Step into STEP” – ABC’s new and innovative tool for contractors that want guidance in establishing a complete safety program.

“Step into STEP” is a free and easy to use program audit that can be completed in less than ten minutes. The Safety Committee of the Keystone Chapter has taken the components from the STEP application and summarized them into shorter statements. By simply answering each statement on a scale ranging from “Strongly Agree” to “Strongly Disagree,” a company can identify its strengths and shortcomings. One of the hardest things to do is to look critically at an organization and honestly evaluate the shortcomings.  This program helps to do that by using the proven key components from ABC’s successful STEP program.
